What goes into designing a great product?

Let's face it! We are visual creatures. How a product looks and feels, for example, can significantly affect the success of a product.
These are the key steps of Design Process:
Design Input
Design Specification Frozen
Design Solution
First Prototype and Design Verification
Design Validation
Design Review
Design Iteration
Design Frozen
Pilot Run
1. Design Input
Product specification and requirement from customer
Use Cases
Business Processes
Wireframes
Design Concepts
2. Design Specification Frozen
Product design specification including hardware, software and/or system
3. Design Solution
System design
Hardware design
Software design
4. First Prototype and Design Verification
Develop and test first prototype according to the product design specification
Verify the outputs as specified by the design requirements
5. Design Validation
Validate the design - user testing and user trial
6. Design Review
Review the design according to the first prototype testing verification and validation results
Develop a list of gaps and recommendations based on the validation results
7. Design Iteration
Modify the approved design changes in reference to the change control procedures
Repeat the design to design review process until it reaches the acceptable design quality
8. Design Frozen
No further changes can be made to the design
Complete all necessary documentation and references for pilot run
9. Pilot Run
Design Approval
Advance to the production development
